Why this blog?

I've lived here for over four years. This is my fifth American Football* season. Each season, by about January, I think I'm getting the hang of it. Then I try talking to someone at work about hey, aren't those Saints doing well? or something that I thought was similarly innocuous and within 30 seconds I've made an arse of myself and I'm back to thinking nasty thoughts about what pansies the Yanks are that they enjoy watching men run around in shiny lycra with more pads and armour than menstruating dinosaurs. That's a horrible image. And I don't want to be that person -- I CHOSE to live in this country, after all.

The aim of this blog is to help me, and any other Brits out there who share the simple goal of being able to have a half-informed conversation around the ubiquitous office water cooler without sounding like a total twat. Seems like a simple goal, but it's one that's eluded me for years. I hope that by enlisting the help of some friends, and friends of friends, and maybe -- eventually -- even some readers, I may know more about American football by next season than I do now. I'll let you know how it goes...

* For my mental health, I intend to refer to the sport as American Football in all my posts. Guest bloggers may not. But hey, why make a blog about this complicated game any easier to understand?
